Bimbesbox –
the pocket-sized wooden wallet

The Bimbesbox is made of wood and stands out for its handmade and extremely practical design. How an excellent product was developed from a spontaneous idea and a love for handicrafts.

Die Bimbesbox - der Holzgeldbeutel im Taschenformat

In the Palatinate region of Germany, "Bimbes" is a colloquial term for money. So this is where the wooden wallet gets its humorous name from. It all started with an idea by friends Nils Marz and Alexander Kempe: "We wanted to design a small, space-saving wallet that would be easy to carry with you. Similar wallets made of plastic were already available, but we quickly decided that the Bimbesbox should be made of wood. When we visited their workshop in Rheinzabern, Germany, Nils, who is a trained optician, explains that he knew Alex was good at woodwork.

The cosy workshop has everything they need and most of the production steps can be completed there. Alex is a self-employed carpenter and is thus extremely familiar with the different types of wood that determine the final look. They only work with high-quality veneers made up of wooden sheets. Only woods that are not included on the CITES index of protected species are used during production. They come from all over the world, providing the range of products with a versatile design.

Nils is in charge of sales and marketing: "The robust yet flexible design ensures that the Bimbesbox is lightweight, sturdy and durable. You can even drive over it with a car!" The box is actually extremely sturdy and torsion-resistant. An additional practical feature is the small leather purse for any loose change that can be attached to the wooden wallet with a rubber band and press stud. Bank notes and up to six cards can be stored in the Bimbesbox.

Professionelles Werkzeug für die Herstellung in der Werkstatt

The importance of the professional tools used to produce the wooden wallet can be explained by the low production tolerances. Of course bank cards must sit perfectly in the final product but must not get stuck. "We require professional tools to ensure we adhere to the specified dimensions and to help us work within the tolerances. We set high quality standards for our products, so we do not compromise on the tools we use either. "We use STABILA tape measures, rules and spirit levels during the individual production steps," explains Alex.

The Bimbesbox is sold via their own online shop, where a few other interesting products are now available in addition to a large selection of wooden wallets and leather purses that go with it. In addition to the online shop, both Alex and Nils believe that personal interactions at trade fairs and events in Germany and Europe are important. Following two difficult years due to COVID, Alex and Nils are happy to be attending lots of events again to present their products to a wide audience.
