EuroSkills Graz 2021 – European Vocational Championship

After being delayed twice because of Covid, the long wait was finally over and EuroSkills 2021 was held in September in Graz, Austria. The championships for young skilled professionals was one of the first to provide an insight into the events industry in Europe for quite some time and, as a proud silver sponsor, STABILA was right in the middle of it all.

EuroSkills 2021 was held from 22 to 26 September in Graz, Austria. Around 30,000 people attended three days of competitions. A total of more than 400 participants from 19 countries took part in 48 competitions. WorldSkills Germany, the German national team, attended with 29 German participants representing 24 skills.

These included skills in trades familiar to STABILA, such as bricklaying, joinery, carpentry, painting, concrete work, tiling and plumbing.

However, trades that are not linked to STABILA, such as florists, chefs, bakers, butchers, hairdressers, and robotic, web design and mechatronics specialists, were also competing for medals.

“As a producer of quality tools for construction professionals and a specialist in measurement technology, supporting young talent in the trade industry is a topic that is very close to our heart. This is why STABILA supports organisations that champion trade professions on both a national and international level.“

This year, the result for Germany was once again one to be proud of. After three days of hard work and effort, the team won four gold, four silver and four bronze medals, as well as six medals for excellence. This included a gold medal for Yannic Schlachter for his tiling efforts (image on right), a silver medal for Stefan Lamminger for system electronics and a bronze medal for Julian Wally for his stone masonry. One of the coveted medals for excellence was awarded to the concrete workers Julian Kiesl and Niklas Berroth (image on left).

Impressions of the competitions and award ceremony

“It is always great to see how participants from different countries work. When building a wall, some only use a piece of string, while others only use a spirit level. It is fascinating and is a lot of fun.“

(EuroSkills bricklaying expert, Jannes Wulfes)

“We would like to congratulate our national team on their success. We are proud of the young people representing the German construction industry who have once again illustrated what training can help you achieve." Managing Director of the Zentralverband Deutsches Baugewerbe (Central Association of the German Construction Industry), Felix Pakleppa.

At the end of the day, the EuroSkills and WorldSkills events encompass a lot more than the precious metal prizes. Over these three days, the young tradespeople from all over Europe create memories that will last them a lifetime. Such effort, concentration and emotion are otherwise only witnessed at the Olympic Games.

As we move into 2022, we are looking forward to promoting our goals and ambitions in supporting young talent again at the WorldSkills event in Shanghai. Our ultimate hope is to inspire lots of young people to explore a career in a trade profession!
