Point lasers are suitable for the interior if work is to take place on a visible point. The compact instruments can easily be carried with their belt pouches and all have a working area of up to 98 ft.

Rotation lasers measure at a very high degree of accuracy and are therefore best suited – in interaction with a receiver – to use at great distances. They offer great functionality and are flexible in their use both inside and out.

The two different self-levelling technologies in STABILA laser levels

Self-levelling pendulum-laser technology
There are two types of STABILA self-levelling lasers. One uses an internal pendulum mechanism to level. A big advantage of a pendulum laser, which is found in our line and dot lasers, is the fast setup speed and ease of use. The basic principle is, the pendulum mechanism hangs and floats freely while self-levelling through gravity.

Fully automatic, motor-driven laser technology
The second, automatically levels using an electronic servomotor. The big advantage of the automatic self-levelling mechanism is the accuracy. This is essential when measuring over long distances. Being electronic the device can also be programmed for features such as tilt warning, slope setting and more.

At set up, whether a pendulum-based or a servomotor-based laser, both unit types will start to level themselves. The unit must then be roughly levelled by hand within its 3° to 5° tolerance. The laser will now accurately level itself and display a correct level laser plane.

Which type of laser level is best suited for which work?

The first thing you need to know when choosing a laser level is which work you plan to do with it. Do you intend to work indoors, outdoors, or even both? Because it is not only the application that you have to keep in mind, but also the range and accuracy at which you will be working at. The measuring accuracy is always stated as a fraction of an inch at a defined distance (see graphic). A simple rule of thumb is: the greater the distance to be measured, the more accurate the laser level must be.

1) up to 60 ft – visible red laser line for use indoors. Transfer and align heights (point laser, line laser, rotation laser)
2) up to 100 ft – visible green laser line for use indoors. Transfer and align heights (point laser, line laser, rotation laser)
3) up to 1000 ft – transfer heights, inclination (rotation laser, line laser with pulsed lines). Work with receiver both indoors and outdoors.

Since the laser level is at the center of its range, see the circular diagram, the distance in any one direction is the radius, the diameter across this area is known as the working range of the laser.

On construction sites the laser level is a tool used by many building trades. As working with any tool you have to know how to use it and the possible hazards involved. When working you should never look directly into a laser beam! Therefore it is very important to take precautions and know the safety measures involved in order to prevent accidents.

What are nanometers and how do they affect laser visibility

Nanometers are a unit of length, like meters or centimeters, that are used for measuring the wavelength of visible light. Our eyes are sensitive to light in a very narrow band of the spectrum of visible light. This visible light has a wavelength ranging from 400 to 700 nanometers (nm), these wavelengths determine the colour we see. The typical colour of a laser level beam is either red or green. The lower the wavelength (nm) of a projected laser beam, the more visible it seems to the human eye. The brightest colour for a STABILA laser is green (532 nm), followed then by red (635 nm). Why are green lasers more visible than red lasers to the human eye? The retina of the human eye is lined with a variety of light sensing cells known as rods and cones and these are far more sensitive to green than red. For this reason lasers with green beams are 4 times more visible to the human eye.

Extremely tough: If a laser and tripod are knocked over – no problem! Just set up the tripod again, switch on and start measuring. The STABILA Protector System (patent applied for) absorbs severe impacts, either through robust hoop guards and rubber sleeves or soft grip casing.
